For a lot of people this will be very out of the box myth busting ideas & we may get some curses too. But that's ok. It's a part of the debate & discuss - tark-vitark Indic process that makes Indic civilizational essence priceless for humanity. We are as ok with constructive curses as we are with accolades All myth busters will be accompanied by facts logics & simple numbers MYTH - If rich Indians or NRIs donate more to poor Indians then poor will become rich, India will be developed and we can win civilizational war. Hence more NGOs & donors are essential (albeit Indic NGOs) OUR EXPLNATION - if this were true then sub Saharan Africa & South Asia would have been most developed & wealthy areas as they have been getting maximum donations and hand outs since almost 2 centuries from few philanthropists. But reality is that they are the worst in terms of quality of life - if your myth was true then how did that happen. Simple arithmetic Number of NRIs as a % of Indian population = 2.5% Number of rich resident Indians as a % of Indian population = 2.5% Other upper middle class that can donate = 10% So that makes total donor base as MAXIMUM OF 15% of population Total middle class that don't need direct donations but cannot donate either = 25% So that leaves poor people that need hand outs/donations = approx 60% So 15% of well to do people are going to donate for 60% of people in abject poverty. And mind you we are grossly exaggerating the number of actual donors as it'll not be 15% of population - but still lets go with best case scenario Assume on average that 15% donor is making INR 10,00,000 per month (averaging the donor population out) - highly inflated Let's assume each donor of the 15% donor population donates average 3% of income (again high hopes) = INR 30,000 So in 100 people 15 donated 30,000 per month. Total donation = 4,50,000 Distributed to 60 poor people = INR 7,500 extra Assume poor makes INR 20,000 a month (exactly as per current per capita) Which basically is good for temporary needs of the poor but does not make us equal to developed country by a FAR shot!!! Coz they're still making only INR 27,500 which is still very poor in relative terms for the world!!! Your per capita will still SUCK even in the unimaginable scenario that EVERY SINGLE upper & upper middle class individual will donate 3% of income religiously every single month with HIGHLY inflated numbers. So now do you see the compete futility of donations as primary means of development? Donations are extremely socialist & tactical & are in no way substitute to real increase of wealth. Any country that has really increased the wealth of its citizens has done it not via freebies but by giving people opportunities of generating employment via access to credit, business friendly policies, minimum corruption at top level, strong work ethics, offering education to all, unification using some nationalist factor and using resources creatively Donations have severe limitations & though they display a good heart & good intention they have extremely limited use in actually changing the economic league of a nation So donations are not bad but more of time pass or feel good for rich people. Those who really want to make a differnence in fundamental economics of a nation should opt for one of the following 1) policy making 2) politics & associated help 3) entrepreneurship & actual job creation 4) creation of intellectual & cultural capital 5) Creative of self sustaining & self financing philanthropic systems And keep dole out & bhiksha as last resort or mere feel good factor
