Trek to Chandrataal

Trek to Chandrataal

At just a few minutes past 3:30 am, I woke up and started getting ready. Water in shower was very cold at that time. Felt strange wishing for hot water in middle of August. After getting ready, I checked out of the hotel and reached the  taxi stand. Tenzin, the driver secured my bag on roof of his Tata Sumo by a rope along with luggage of other passengers and started driving by 4:15.  Apart from me, there were 3 Israeli tourists and 4 locals. A local 3 day long festival was just starting that day in Kaza and some of the locals were going there to attend it. I took a seat in back and sat down hoping to doze a little.

But that hope proved to be futile. For 30-40 minutes or so, road was well paved but after that it got bad, helped in no less deal by the recent rains. It was full of rubble and stones due to big and small landslides and the ride was not exactly smooth.  I even started to get a little motion-sickness but it wasn't too bad.  After 5:30 am, sun started to come up and one could enjoy the sights. The scenery was beautiful beyond words. We were traveling on mountains and could see dense clouds covering the valley below. Going by the view, we could've been flying in an airplane. By that time, road had been completely  replaced by a dirt track with mud up to 10-15 cm deep, sometimes even more. Just a few km before Rohtang pass, we got stuck in a jam, but fortunately it didn't last long.

To Spiti from Manali

To Spiti from Manali

I had read about Lahaul and Spiti  in a book अरे यायावर रहेगा याद  (Arey Yayavar Rahega Yaad ) a long time back . Though I don't remember much details now, but visiting the place became a 'thing to do before I die' for me. I love trekking in mountains, but never had the opportunity to do so  in way that I like. So when a chance came up to visit the place on a solo trekking trip, I dropped everything else for this .
The place is remote, rugged and not easy to travel compared to most other tourist destinations. So it took some preparation, physical as well as material. One needs good stamina for trekking specially at that altitude of 4000m +.  Just lifting weights and beefing up muscles is not the solution. I could write something on this but I'm hardly an expert and this blog is not the place for this topic either. Choosing luggage, tools etc was another area where I had very little experience in. I browsed a lot of websites, asked a lot of silly questions but managed to gather a list which could help me survive the trip. I picked up a 70 litres rucksack, sleeping bag, multi-tool  from Delhi and bought  propane stove, tent,  mat, ready to eat meals, etc from Manali. This was in addition to the  other stuff that one carries like clothes, first-aid kit, high energy snacks etc.

I reached Manali on 15th August via a Volvo bus. Now I'm thinking of avoiding these buses operated by private operators as they are generally in poor condition, seats are mismanaged and the staff is rude and stupid.  Even that bus ride was late by 2-3 hours and reached Manali by 11:30 am. I had woken around 6 before that when the bus had stopped at a roadside dhaba for breakfast. Don't know the place's name, but it was very green and beautiful. After sometime, one could see apple orchards along the road with almost ripe apples hanging from branches.   After that, I was unable to go back to sleep and kept mostly awake till the bus stopped  in manali 5 hours later. I didn't feel like roaming around searching for hotels as I wasn't going to stay there for long. So followed a tout to the nearest hotel which didn't turn out to be all that bad. After a quick shower and an early lunch, I stepped out to explore the city.
New Manali is just a crowded and noisy market typical of many Indian cities. So I quickly  left the place and walked up to Hidimba Mandir. A lot of tourists there too, but atleast it had a good tree cover. The temple like most other  temples in Himachal is made of timber and earth. Her son with Bhim, Ghatokach has a place beneath some trees just a few meters away.
Hidimba Temple, Manali

From there, I walked down to Old Manali half a km away.  One has to cross a bridge on a Beas tributary which seemed flooded to me. But for locals, it was normal water level. After walking through the market, one comes across an old temple dedicated to Manu, who is considered  progenitor of human race according to Hindu beliefs.   The outer structure of temple is around 20 years old compared to centuries old inner sanctum.   A foreign tourist was trying to teach some local kids whistle using a grass blade without much success. Old Manali still maintains the character and charm of an old town in places and thus is a better place for people trying to escape the chaos of cities. Although the shops and eating joints are tailored towards foreigners, it's not as annoying as New Manali. After spending some time there, I wandered around till I found a signboard with directions for Vashisht Kund 3 km away.
One can enjoy hot water bath at any time of year there. The water has a slight smell of Sulphur and the temperature is just right for soaking  in for a long bath. A temple alongside is dedicated to ancient Indian sage Vashisht. After the temple, I walked to a roof top restaurant nearby to eat something. The river,  mountains and apple orchards offered an amazing view from there.  It was getting dark by then, so I walked back to my hotel to sleep.

Next day, I was out of hotel by 9:30 and searching for a place to have some breakfast. All Tibetan owned shops were closed due to a protest against Chinese atrocities in  Tibet. I  Settled for honey porridge and mint tea. As I was awaiting for food to arrive, I noticed a Tibetan procession protesting against Chines atrocities in their homeland Tibet. People were walking quietly in a straight line carrying banners . It was very different from usually noisy, disruptive and chaotic marches which are the norm elsewhere. But I don't think that Tibet can win freedom using non-violent means like these. No oppressor has been thrown out just by non-violent protests.  I did sign their petition though when one volunteer requested it later in evening. Alongside Beas river bank, authorities have put aside a wooded area for a park called Van Vihar where people can stroll through enjoying the woods. Even though the area was a bit littered, a relaxed walk was a nice experience.

After that, I walked around in market searching for camping gear which I hadn't bought till then. Some places rent gear too, but buying it was only slightly more expensive. Bought a few packs of ready to eat meals, chocolates, biscuits, fruits etc which must've added at least 4kgs to my backpack.  Arranged for a seat in a shared Tata Sumo taxi which left at ungodly 4:00am in morning. If you leave later, you can't reach Kaza in time. As I was going to Chandrataal Lake, my stop was in Batal or Kunzum La. But the price was same. I paid the driver some advance and asked him to make sure that he calls me at least once in morning and walked back to my hotel to pack. It took some work, but I was finished by 10:00 pm. Everything in a single bag that one can sling over back. Nice.  Set an alarm for 3:30am, went to bed but kept watching TV till 12:30.

Visit to OFB pavilion was a pleasant surprise. I met some representatives who were really helpful and patient with explaining how their stuff worked. I got some nice explanations about working of different types of tank ammunitions and their respective roles. Much better than someone like me with no credentials could expect from a PSU.

Arjun is a bigger tank when compared to T-90 and it’s quite obvious not only from outside. Even the insides are completely different. Inside T-90 there is hardly any room for movement or even partial stretching of limbs. Arjun on the other hand is spacious and much more comfortable. See for yourself in the

India successfully tested Agni V ballistic missile with officially declared range of 5000 km on 19th April 2012. According to scientists, it was a textbook launch with all the parameters and technologies tested successfully. I’m writing this post to collect as much information as possible about the missile and it’s effects.

This is going to be my first ever attempt to write a travel diary. I haven’t tried anything like this before and don’t know how it’s going to come out. I think writing one single post for each day spent will be the right way to do it. Anyhow, here it goes

I wanted to go on a solo trip somewhere for a long time and 1st week of April seemed like a good opportunity. But I had no idea where to go until last week of March. All I knew that the place should be mountainous and not crowded. McLeodganj seemed to be a good enough place and after thinking about it for a bit I chose it as my destination. Getting there from Delhi takes approximately 12 hours by road. I took a Volvo bus which was full of tourists from all over the world. It wasn’t very comfortable journey but I managed to doze through most of it.

This is second post of my series of posts describing my visit to McLeodganj. First part is here.

Coming back to the road, I started walking back towards McLeodganj when I came across a a small trail going upwards which I thought led to another road above. I was right in this assumption, but I wasn’t 100% sure if it led back to the town. Nevertheless, I kept walking. I wasn’t really sure about where to go next. I thought about walking to Dal lake, which didn’t seem too far away according to the map that I was carrying. But I was wary of visiting so many places in one day and getting bored during rest of my stay. A few minutes later I came across a foreign tourist who asked me directions to some place in broken heavily accented English. Then she showed me pictures of the place she wanted to go on her phone. It seemed like Dal lake but I was not 100% sure. So I asked an aged local who was walking by. He was fairly certain that it was Dal lake and told us that it was about 2 km away.

This is 3rd post in a series of posts describing my visit to Mcleodganj. You can read previous posts on this link.

Day two started with me waking up at 8 am and getting out of the hotel approximately half an hour later. Walking through the market, I came across one small restaurant named Peace with a Korean flag on the door. It claimed to be completely vegetarian Curious, I entered to check out the menu. There were 5-6 tables, all except 1 of which were occupied by foreigners. Owners of the place certainly didn’t look Tibetan but I didn’t ask.

This is my 4th post in the series of posts describing my visit to McLeodganj. First 3 parts are in this link.

After lunch of momos, I took the road to Dharmkot. It’s a steep climb for quite a distance as you may observe in the picture. After walking for a while, I left the road and took a less traveled trail which passed through heavily wooded area. Massive Deodar trees formed such a dense canopy that no sunlight reached the ground below. The place not only looked good but smelled great too. Fresh fragrant air

After some time I met a Tibetan man walking and asked him for directions. He guided me to point where trail ended on a bend on main road to Dharmkot. He owned a small shop there. Walking on main road was not as serene but at least it had some great views. After walking for more than 90 minutes, I reached a point, where 3 paths diverged.

On day three I got out of hotel room and walked in market for a while before entering a cafe for breakfast. Took the road to Dharmkot again and met the same man I had asked for directions in lower Dharmkot village previous day. He had come this far just to get some work done in a bank. He gave some more tips regarding shortcuts and paths.

This is 6th post in this series of posts describing my visit Mcleodganj. Other posts are on this link.

The day begun with An joining me for a breakfast of parantha, omelette and tea in a small eating joint. She wanted to sample only Indian food that day. Parantha was too salty for my taste and tea too sugary for her. Most foreigners don’t like the sweet milky concoction which passes for tea in India. Tibetan tea is mostly a mixture of herbs in boiling water or they drink salty butter tea. Start wasn’t good enough but we had a lot of time to sample food from other places. Our plan for the day was a trek to that waterfall in Dharmkot. It isn’t even mentioned in most tourist guides but whatever I had inferred, it promised to be one of the best places to visit.

This is last post in this series of posts describing my visit Mcleodganj. Other posts are on this link.

Day 5 was supposed to be the last day of my stay in Mcleodganj, but I had to stay one day extra as all the bus tickets had been sold out. Although I wasn’t exactly annoyed, I had no idea about what to do with all the spare time either. I had seen and done almost everything that I wanted. Only thing left was a complete trek to snow line via Triund, but it needed much more time than I had. So I decided to just wander around.

This is going to be a long rant which may seem offensive to some people. So if your sensibilities are easily hurt, please don’t read further.

So…you’re still here. In case you didn’t know I was in Mcleodganj last month and wrote a long series of posts about my experiences there. What I left out was how some stupid tourists make it highly annoying for other people. I usually hate generalisations, but this experience made it look like that some traits are ingrained in certain groups of people more than others.

The Hindu Unity Day Keynote Talk-- Stephen Knapp

This was the live version, in front of the audience of 1500, of the keynote lecture given at the Hindu Unity Festival at the Hindu Temple in Flushing, New York on July 10, 2011. Stephen was sharing the stage with Dr. Subramanian Swamy and Kamal Kumar Swamiji who also were main speakers there, amongst others. The audience very much appreciated what Stephen had to say, many of whom wanted to speak with him, have pictures taken with him, or shake his hand, etc, after the talk. This was a specific message to a specific audience.
More information about Stephen and his books, articles, writings, projects, and photos of India can be found at his website at www.stephen-knapp.com and his blog at http://stephenknapp.wordpress.com

The day I became a movie star, almost

Your's truly is one of select people on the planet who have had the chance to act in the movies, It isn't like I'm a good actor, I never took part even in school plays. Neither do I have a great personality or good looks, In fact on that day I was looking even more hideous than usual. No shave for 2-3 weeks, overgrown hair looking like matted coils due to sweat and dust and worse. Anyhow, here is the  story:

It just happened that we and a few friends from office were on a visit to Khajuraho in late August. We were 5 people, me, Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Archie.Obviously the names have been changed to protect the identities. :p   Rainy season is usually  an off season for tourists  due to rains  and the fact the nearby Panna National Park is closed. So we were able to find  a good lodge nearly empty. How it filled up to it's full capacity just in 2 days is another story,  We had a pretty good time there. There is a lot to see and explore in even famous places that no tourist book or show tells you. During first two days we had been to two water-falls Pandav and Raneh, Panna city (not the national park), and Kalinjar.  Me and Jughead managed to see some of the temples in Khajuraho on day one while the rest preferred to rest

So it was decided that we are going to see all the temples together on 3rd day. We woke up early and visited the Jain temples complex. Those particular  temples are still being used and have been repaired rather tastelessly by the locals. Only a part of the ancient design is left as some of the temples have been plastered and modified with time. We spent most of our morning there and it was decided that we'll see rest of the temples in afternoon and catch the train back home in evening.  Rst of the temples still retain most of their original design and beauty. Me and Jughead had already seen most of the remaining temples by ourselves, so the rushed schedule didn't matter much to us.
So we came back to our lodge/hotel for a quick shower and something to eat. As we came back we saw unusual amount of activity going on in the area. On inquiring we were told that crew from  local Bundeli movie were staying in a few lodges adjacent to us. I don't understand much of Bundeli and had even less interest in any movie shoot, so didn't gave it much thought and got busy with much needed shower and an early lunch.
After shower we were lazing around in one of our lodges. I was sitting on a chair leafing through a tourist guide while  rest of group was scattered on the bed and porch. Just then a middle aged gentleman came outside our lodge and   politely tried to draw attention. Jughead was standing nearby and I asked him to go check what he wanted. As Jughead went outside the man shook his head and pointed at me. I stood up with  a puzzled expression and walked up to him.

" हाँ जी सर  ?" ( Yes sir ?)I asked.

The man shook my hand and introduced himself, "मेरा नाम ```कुछ ``` है और हम यंहा पे अपनी एक बुन्देली पिक्चर की शूटिंग कर रहे हैं  ( My name is ```somehing``` and we are shooting our Bundeli movie here. I'm the director.)

I nodded, looking suitably impressed, waiting for him to go on.

" दरअसल  बात ये है की हम ने १ सीन की शूटिंग करनी थी और उसके  लिए हमें आपकी मदद चाहिए .

I was carrying my new DSLR around and thought maybe he needed some help with pictures or camera. So I nodded again,  ठीक है, बताइये  किस तरंह मदद कर सकता हूँ ? ("Alright, so how can I help ?")

Looking encouraged, he pointed towards the big garden in front of us and said, "आपको बस हमारे लिए एक छोटा सा रोले करना है. हम एक सीन शूट कर रहे हैं जिस में आपने थोड़ी दूर से चल कर आना है और हीरोइन को अपनी बाँहों में उठाना है. हम आपका ज़यादा समय बर्बाद नहीं केंगे.  (" We need you to help us by playing a role. We have to shoot a scene here in which you come walking from a distance and pick up the heroine in your arms..We will not waste too much of your time")

This "offer" was completely unexpected and I was more than surprised.  Rest of my friends were within earshot and as I looked towards them, I found them rolling in hysterical laughter trying to say something but all I could hear were  their snorts and wheezing.

Before I could say anything, they were upon me grabbing me by  arms, neck, hair..anything hat they could lay their grimy paws upon and were like, "ये क्या करेगा ? सीन क्या है ? हीरोइन कौन है .. इत्यादी  ( "What'll he do ? What's the scene,  who is heroine..etc etc." )

I was like, "चुप करो बेवकूफों  ऐसा क्या हो गया ? ( " Take a break you idiots, what really happened ?" )

They responded with, "हाँ बोल . हाँ बोल. वैसे भी तू  किसी बी - गरेड फिल्म के एक्टर जैसा ही लगता है .  ( " Say yes, say yes. You already look like a B-grade movie star. Say yes.")

I'm told that my facial expressions at that time were even more weirder than usual. The director again said, "कर लीजिये सर.  आपका बहुत कम समय लगेगा इस में.  ( "Sir please do it. It'll take just a few minutes of your time.")
At that time I was reminded of a former room-mate and colleague who is now working in TV serials in Mumbai. Why me ? Why not him ?  Call him
Outwardly, I hesitantly nodded in confirmation and found rest of my "friends" again roaring with laughter. We were goofing around with cameras before all this and  I found that these people had a  sudden new found enthusiasm about getting pictures clicked with me. Talk about getting famous.

Within a few minutes director had called up some of his crew members to help me get ready for the shoot. He started explaining the scene and movie hurriedly. I don't remember too much of it except that it had something to do with social message but as is the case with most B-grade or regional movies it had a bit of sexual innuendo, double meaning etc. That gave me a pause and even Archie agreed but somehow I was convinced not to say no.

By then the crew had readied their shot and I was called in to the adjacent lodge where they were staying. I found the room decorated like one for suhaagraat (first night of a married couple). Bed was decorated with flowers and dim lights all over. As I turned, a crew guy with a kurta  payjama in hand came to me and asked me to change in to it. I changed in to kurta and walked up to the director and asked, " एक बार फिर बताएँगे की  सीन क्या है ? ( " What was the scene again ? " )

He  stopped whatever he was doing with camera at once and said,  ये  सीन इस लड़की की शादी की पहली  रात का है   (" This is the scene of first night of this girls married life." ) I turned around to see the girl and found that thing that I had at first mistakenly  assumed to be a tall lamp covered with cloth was a girl in saaree. Too much excitement, I guess.
आपने इस सीन में बस दरवाज़े से चल कर आना है, इन्हें बाहों में उठाकर बिस्तर पर रख देना है .  ("All you have to do in this scene is to walk in through the door, pick her up in your arms and put her on the bed.")

I was again surprised, " ये तो सुहाग रात का सीन है  (" It's a wedding night scene !!??" )
By then all of my friends were inside the room laughing, pointing fingers and clicking pictures, except Archie who seemed a bit serious.

Director turned to issue some instructions to some one and said, " हाँ , पर चिंता मत कीजिये . इस में कुछ भी अश्लील या ऐसा-वैसा नहीं है. हम तो एक सामाजिक सन्देश देने वाली फिल्म बना रहे हैं. आपको इन्हें उठाकर बिस्तर पर  रखने के अलावा और कुछ नहीं करना.  ( "Of course, but don't worry. It isn't vulgar or anything like that. We are making a movie with a social message. You don't have to do anything except  picking her up and putting on bed. That's all."

Before that, I was under the impression that the scene was to be shot in the garden with me picking up the girl as they do in movies. This whole wedding night scene was something else entirely. I looked at Archie and he shook his head.  He walked up to me and said, "This whole thing looks fishy. They'll just morph your face on to some porn movie and sell it as a real one."

I was not thinking on this line exactly but it was even worse, although I didn't exactly believe it to be true.. But I was not feeling too comfortable about the entire thing and it showed as I looked around the place with a big scowl on face, as if weighing my options. Inside I had no idea about what to do. Turning back after going on for so long just seemed stupid. But then Archie said loudly, "Come on. Don't do it."

That's all encouragement that I needed and I at once took off their kurta and handed it over to some crew member. Director tried to convince me, but I walked out saying something like that we had a totally different idea of what you wanted me to do, or something to that effect. But I don't remember much of it.
We were getting late for the temple tours and left the hotel soon after. I'm sure that all of the crew, specially that director must have been quite pissed off but I don't think that I had much choice.

As was expected, this incident has been mentioned quite often in my work place but it had some positive outcomes. Whenever any one there comments about my appearance, long hair, unshaven beard etc, I just mention that unlike them I have received offers for acting in movies. So they'd rather not comment adversely on my looks. However I don't know how long is this going to work.

BackTrack 5 Linux. Startx not working

Don't run apt-get upgrade yet. It'll just download and install 500MB worth of software and the problem will come back on next reboot. Also keep in mind that updates have to be installed on hard disk installation. Don't run this command on live DVD boot Now you have to download and install drivers for your graphics card. Mine is a NVidia and I downloaded my drivers from this page: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
For 32-Bit, run command

wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/290.10/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-290.10.run

For 64 bit,
wget  http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/290.10/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-290.10.run
Users with Intel and ATI chipsets  can download their divers from http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-010512.htm and http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx . After the downloads are complete, install the divers using  either ./driver-file-name.run or sh driver-file-name.run command. You may have to make the files executable first using chmod +x driver-file-name . Some drivers may come in different packages. Follow the instructions in that case.
Run apt-get -f install to fix any missing dependencies and then run startx. You may want to reboot once before doing that though.  startx will work just fine as intended and will guide you to he BackTrack 5 desktop.
